Trafik - Progressive House & Electronica

Highly respected in the progressive scene, and receiving praise from the likes of no less than Pete Tong, expectations are high for this sample DVD (I want to still call them CDs!). SIgned to the massive Global Underground, the duo known as Trafik have released two artist albums and an assortment of mix CDs, including the GUMIXED pt 1 and 2. The layout on this DVD is very similar to the Aquasky release and covers all the same formats.

Drum Loops

This folder is broken down into BPM folders, 125 to 135 BPM. I don't really understand the need for this with everything being either rex'd or acidized, and would have preferred all the drums in one folder or broken down into say different feels. There has been a lot of attention to detail in the programming of these loops, with lots of effects and perc spinning round the stereo field. You don't get as many loops as the Aquasky release but they are all good quality and value for money.

Bass Loops

These are again broken down into BPM numbers and I wish they had been put in an order of mood or feel. These loops are perfectly useable, nice and clean sounding although do - I feel - lack any real wow factor, but this is a sample set aimed at the progressive market and is not going to include any crazy screaming bass noises is it!? Saying that layering any of these loops over some of the beats, they give off an atmosphere perfect for the progressive genre.

Musical Loops

This is where for me these producers are in their element. Producing lots of rich textures, moody, epic and all very inspiring. The best loops in here are the ones where they sound like the start of a track, a wicked chord sequence or progression, and I found myself wanting to fire up Logic immediately. They sound like there is alot of processing going on and the sounds feel very big, again perfect for the genre.

Hits

The single bass hits are closer to what I was looking in terms of sound design from the bass loops, and could see myself using them alot. You also get another folder full of other assorted hits, bleeps and noises, which would come into their own when they are used in a percussive manner.

Summary

All in all there is not as much in terms of content on this compared to the Aquasky DVD, but the musical loops are first class and if that's what your after this is worth a peek!
